The QUB Solar Physics group comprises of 4 faculty and is part of the Astrophysics Research Centre. Current research activities include the study of: (1) Waves and oscillations in both active and quiet solar regions (2) Solar and stellar flares with emphasis on photospheric and chromospheric diagnostics (3) Small-scale structures including spicules, Ellerman Bombs and photospheric magnetic bright points (4) The Solar-Stellar connection (5) The calculation of atomic data for applications to astrophysics. We utilise high-resolution observations from ground-based and space-borne facilities as well as inversion algorithms for the interpretation of the acquired datasets. We constructed and commissioned the Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere (ROSA) multi-wavelength imaging system that is part of the Dunn Solar Telescope instrumentation suite. We have close relations with industry and have led the development of the cameras that equip 4 of the instruments of the Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST). We maintain a strong cohort of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Many of our PhD graduates hold academic posts at national and international institutes.
