Germany
Research of practical utility lies at the heart of all activities pursued by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Founded in 1949, the research organization undertakes applied research that drives economic development and serves the wider benefit of society. Its services are solicited by customers and contractual partners in industry, the service sector and public administration. At present, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft maintains more than 80 research units in Germany, including 60 Fraunhofer Institutes. The majority of the 20,000 staff are qualified scientists and engineers, who work with an annual research budget of €1.8 billion.
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft will participate in the SOLARNET project with its Institute Fraunhofer-IOSB.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Optronics, System Technology and Image Exploitation (IOSB) is Europe´s largest research institute in the field of image acquisition, processing and analysis. Control and automation technology, information and knowledge management complete the portfolio of the institute. Areas of focus are the evaluation and development of active and passive electro-optical sensors systems as well as surveying object properties in consideration of environmental factors and the atmosphere. In addition to developing and executing measurement procedures, software applications are also developed in order to analyse, evaluate and distinguish electro-optical properties in digital images.
Research activities in the Adaptive Optics Group at Fraunhofer IOSB revolve around imaging through turbulence (especially along horizontal paths and strong turbulence) and free-space laser communications. The team develops simulations, theoretical models, image processing software and adaptive optics systems. Imaging and laser propagation through strong turbulence has unique challenges, quite different from astronomical adaptive optics, and therefore unconventional approaches to the problems must be developed. The Group has participated in several international collaborations and experiments and has had projects funded by foreign agencies, in particular from the aerospace and defense sector.
