The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) has its historic roots in the Berlin Observatory founded in 1700 and the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam established in 1874. The Institute is a foundation according to civil law of the state of Brandenburg and is a member of the Leibniz Association. It carries out fundamental astrophysical research. The main research areas Cosmic Magnetic Fields and Extragalactic Astrophysics are organized into several scientific program areas: Magneto-Hydrodynamics and Turbulence, Physics of the Sun, Stellar Physics and Activity, Milky Way and the Local Volume, Dwarf Galaxies and the Galactic Halo, Galaxies and Quasars, and Cosmology and High-Energy Astrophysics. These research areas are closely intertwined through the application of related mathematical and physical methods and through joint projects in the development and adoption of new technologies. The scientific program areas are consequently accompanied by four program areas focusing on the development of novel research technology: Telescope Control and Robotics, High-Resolution Spectroscopy and Polarimetry, 3D Spectroscopy, and Supercomputing and E-Science.

Key Research Facilities, Infrastructure and Equipment. The Institute is and has been involved in major, EU-funded infrastructure projects such as OPTICON, SOLARNET, and PRE-EST, which have significant impact on the European astronomy/astrophysics and solar physics communities. The Institute is partner in major instrumentation projects such as the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), the Four-Meter Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) in Arizona, the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR), and the GREGOR solar telescope on Tenerife, Spain, and AIP operates its own robotic twin-telescopes STELLA on Tenerife.
